Third Level Education

Institute of Technology Tralee www.ittralee.ie a university level institution, offers courses in Business, Multimedia, Humanities & Social Studies, Hotel, Catering & Tourism, Engineering & Construction, Science & Computing and Nursing & Healthcare, with progression paths from Higher Certificate and Ordinary Degree to Honours Degree to Masters and Ph.D. It has over 3,000 full-time and part-time students and 250 staff. The Institute attracts students from all over Ireland and Europe and prides itself on its friendly and caring approach to its students.
Within a two hour drive from Kerry there are four other third level institutions. University College Cork (UCC) has over 16,000 students (www.ucc.ie). University of Limerick (UL) has over 11,000 students (www.ul.ie). Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (www.cit.ie) and Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) (www.lit.ie) have over 6,000 and 4,000 students respectively.

The Entrepreneur Programmes


One in five students in Kerry study entrepreneurship; this is more than anywhere else in Ireland. The Young Entrepreneur Programme (www.youngentrepreneur.ie) was developed by the Institute of Technology, Tralee, Shannon Development and Entrepreneur Jerry Kennelly. It has become a standard on the curriculum of secondary school and third level students in the region and has received international recognition for its innovative approach to entrepreneurship, education and the high level of interaction between students and entrepreneurs. In 2012, the founders of the Young Entrepreneur Programme joined forces with Mary Immaculate College to develop the Junior Entrepreneur programme for primary schools; this programme introduces enterprise education and develops enterprise skills among the 10-12 age group in a novel and engaging way.(www.juniorentrepreneur.ie)

New Frontiers (www.enterprise-ireland.com/newfrontiers)is Ireland's national entrepreneur development programme which is funded by Enterprise Ireland and is delivered at a local level by the Institutes of Technology. IT Tralee is one of the 13 Institutes of Technology providing budding entrepreneurs and start-ups with a package of supports to help accelerate business development and equip the entrepreneurs with the skills and contacts needed to successfully start and grow a company.

Skills Training


Solas (www.solas.ie), Ireland’s national training and employment authority operates a Training Centre in Tralee. A wide range of training programmes is provided including information technology, media, finance apprenticeships, green energy and construction. Short courses are provided at weekends or evenings over three terms per year. All courses are certified to international standards.
